Juli-vira Movie Macabre

Did you catch the title reference?

I realize that it's only mid-September, and many of you less avid Halloween peoples, will be first to point this out. However, time is irrelevant and of the essence right? Besides you can watch horror 365 days of the year. Consider this preparation for October.

Last year I created a Halloween book list so this year I decided to make a horror movie list, and please note it is not kid friendly. This is my own personal list and is strictly my opinion. I'm not a horror movie expert, but I've been watching horror movies probably far sooner than someone should be allowed. My first scary movie was Nightmare on Elm St and I was in like the second grade (in case you were curious). So, since I've seen quite a bit of the horror movie genre in my life I tried to make this list as diverse as I could and have added sub-sections because there are SO many movies worth watching.

I'm only going into detail with 10 movies and will just list the others. So if you're curious keep reading and let me know what your favorites are!

10. The Decent: This movie has certainly solidified my distaste for small spaces and even more so spelunking. The premise: after suffering a personal tragedy the main character and a few of her best thrill seeking friends set out into the woods to explore uncharted cave territory. As they descend further down into the Earth they start to realize perhaps they aren't alone while also facing personal demons and truths. (Netflix)

9. As Above So Below: When I saw the trailer for this movie I feel perhaps it didn't really do this movie justice. Again, this movie solidifies my dislike for going into the Earth. The Premise: Our heroine is following in the footsteps of her father searching for the truth behind some of our biggest mythos and looking for the Holy Grail. Finding herself headfirst into the famed catacombs of Paris, France. Her and her guides fall into this journey deeper and deeper into the catacombs. This movie I really love because of the intelligence behind the stories within the story. (Netflix)

8. Scream: I add this one because I feel that it deserves credit for resurrecting the horror/slasher movie genre in the 90's. The Premise: A group of friends find themselves in the middle of a real-life slasher movie as the "Ghostface" killer starts picking them off one by one. With Sydney the clear target. This movie is witty and humorous and is clearly now a cult classic.

7. Starry Eyes: No idea how I found this movie but it's a keeper. The Premise: Sarah is living in Hollywood with a group of other inspiring actors/actresses in a competition to become the next big star. In this movie we find out how far Sarah is willing to go to become that star with a little help from Satan.

6. House of the Devil: I fell in love with the details to this movie which is set in the 80's. The Premise: Struggling college student named Sam takes a "babysitting" job to make extra money. Arriving at a giant house, with some strange owners, she finds she's not watching over a child but the mother to the owner. The night starts out seeming normal but soon finds that things aren't what they seem. (Netflix)

5. Crimson Peak: Again, I fell in love with the cinematic details of this movie. The time placement, the dresses, everything is so exquisitely executed. But what else would you expect from the amazing Guillermo del Toro. The Premise: From a young age Edith has believed in ghosts. After marrying a handsome and mysterious Sir Thomas Sharpe she starts to realize that ghosts are far more real than she imagined.

4. Suspiria: For this list I'm referring to the original Argento version. Although there is another version that to me is based off of this one and is worth it's watch. But this movie opened up my world to the fact that horror can be beautifully done. The Premise: As an American in a foreign land Suzy dances her way into a position at a prestigious dance school. However, nothing at the school is what it seems as Suzy realizes perhaps she's dancing her way to her own death.

3. Trick 'r Treat: Holy Halloween I seriously love this movie! I would totally take Sam home, if I didn't already have kids that is. The Premise: This movie is several stories that are combined into one which is in a way told to you by the candy loving Sam. This movie has a little bit of everything, serial killers, werewolves, ghosts, zombies etc. This is on my watch list all year round. (Amazon)

2. Halloween: This almost made my #1, but after a little thought it landed here. This movie is the OG of slasher/horror film and if you're into cinema really look into how the film was made. The Premise: After murdering his sister and spending most of his life locked up in a psychiatric prison Michael Myers escapes and terrorizes Haddonfield on the anniversary of his sisters death, and goes on a killing spree.

1. Hellraiser: This movie is honestly the only movie that scared me as a child (hence why it's #1) Yes, I watched it far too young, but hey I'm ok. This movie is not for faint of heart and will leave an impression. Especially if you believe in the existence of hell. The Premise: Kristy along with her father and stepmother move into their uncle/brothers home. Too bad for them his ghost is still there, running from hell along with Pinhead and his cenobites, the sadistic torturers of hell.
